A FAMILY of Luanshya has been left in shock after it encountered a bizarre incident in which a coffin of its deceased two-year-three-months-old child has been exhumed barely two days after burial.
The coffin was found outside the grave at Luanshya cemetery with the body lying besides it.
Copperbelt police commissioner Joyce Kasosa confirmed the bizarre incident which happened on Saturday.
Ms Kasosa named the deceased girl as Beatrice Chama, daughter of Sharon Kalaluka, 24, of house number 440, Walala Township in Luanshya.
She said the child died last week on Tuesday at Thomson Hospital after an illness and was buried two days later on Thursday.
“On Saturday, the mother went to the cemetery and found the coffin outside the grave with the body lying next to it,” she said.
Ms Kasosa said the mother then reported the matter to the police who rushed to the scene where they conducted an inspection of the body, which revealed that it was intact.
She said the family to the mother of the deceased child suspected the father of being responsible as he had differed with them when his daughter died.
Ms Kasosa said the family said the father of the deceased girl had allegedly lamented that his daughter was not dead and that they should bring her back.
“The grave has been left open while the body has been taken back to Thomson Hospital mortuary. An inquiry file has been opened and investigations launched,” Ms Kasosa said.
