A FIFTEEN-YEAR-OLD girl in Serenje District in Central Province has killed herself after allegedly differing with her parents over her flirting with boys.
The girl, a Grade seven pupil, threw herself in a river.
Central Province commissioner of police Standwell Lungu and Serenje District Commissioner Charles Mwelwa confirmed this yesterday.
Mr Lungu said the girl of Ngulwe Kabonde area in Serenje committed suicide between March 16 and 19, this year.
He said the girl threw herself in the river after getting angry with her parents who had reprimanded her for ‘playing’ with boys.
And Mr Mwelwa said police officers retrieved the girl’s body from the river on Wednesday after it was found floating by some people and had since been buried.
Mr Mwelwa also said a woman identified as Jennifer Phiri, 22, of Chieftainess Serenje’s area, has been arrested for dumping her newly-born baby into a well.
He said Chieftainess Serenje reported the matter to the police on March 18 after members of the public noticed the pregnancy missing.
Mr Mwelwa said upon realising that police officers were searching for her, Ms Phiri ran away but was later arrested. She would appear in court today.
The district commissioner said the baby had not yet been retrieved from the well as the police officers in the area had no capacity to conduct such operations and were waiting for fire fighters from Mkushi.
