THE International Relief Friendship Foundation (IRFF) has called on organisations in Zambia to consistently contribute to community schools in order to sustain the concept.
IRFF country representative Nicholas Chanda said when the Lions Club of Kansenshi donated 20 desks to Mckenzie Community School in Ndola on Tuesday that sustaining community schools was the responsibility of every organisation operating in the various communities.
Mr Chanda said organisations should donate all they could and not always wait to make donations that were worth a lot of money.
“Most organisations are of the view that if they have to donate, it should cost a lot of money but that should not be the case,” he said.
Mr Chanda said when the IRFF built Mckenzie Community School in 2000, it was their understanding that the community as well as companies and charitable organisations would work together to sustain the project.
He said he was happy that the Lions Club of Kansenshi had donated 20 desks because learning could never take place without such facilities.
Mr Chanda praised the club for its consistent support to the school.
Lions Club of Kansenshi representative Joseph Nyirenda said the children at the school were future leaders who needed help to realise their dreams.
Mr Nyirenda said the only way to minimise street children was by keeping young people in school.
He said it was for that reason that the club donated the desks worth K10, 000.
Mr Nyirenda said he was happy that the school had been maintained well so far.
Mckenzie Community School has four teachers and runs from Grade One to Grade Four.
