FORMER Zambia soccer team and Ndola United midfielder Kaiser ‘KK’ Kalambo has died.
Kalambo, who starred for the national soccer team at three Africa Cup of Nations tournaments before becoming coach at Ndola United, Ndola Lime and Konkola Blades, died in the early hours of yesterday at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) in Lusaka after an illness.
His son Luka confirmed the death in an interview yesterday. He said Kalambo died after an illness at the UTH, where he had been admitted for the past three weeks.
Zambia Football Coaches Association (ZAFCA) vice-president Lewis Shambulo, who was a close friend of late Kalambo, also confirmed the development in a separate interview yesterday.
Kalambo, born on June 6, 1953, started his football career in the 1970’s at Roan United, then joined Ndola United before playing for Ndola Lime (now Lime Hotspurs), and eventually played for the national team.
After hanging up his boots, Kalambo coached at Ndola United and Vitaform before moving to Botswana, where he coached Township Rollers, Blue Diamonds and Botswana Meat Commission.
He came back to Zambia and was appointed Blades coach in 2009, and in 2010 he took charge of National Assembly before the two parted ways.
Kalambo is survived by a wife Anne and six children.
