Beautifully Healthy LogoHELLO! Greetings my dear readers! I do hope you are having a fabulous week. Today I continue with my series on healing and beautifying oils and spices.
And we look at Rose water. Yes it is made from roses, which is the hydrosol portion of the distillate of rose petals, a by-product of the production of rose oil for use in perfume.
It is used to flavour food, as a component in some cosmetic and medical preparations, and for religious purposes throughout Europe and Asia.
This is according to Wikipedia, which will also tell you that Rose water was first produced by Muslim chemists in the medieval Islamic world through the distillation of roses, for use in the drinking and perfumery industries.
Since ancient times, roses have been used medicinally, nutritionally, and as a source of perfume.
The ancient Greeks, Romans and Phoenecians considered large public rose gardens to be as important as croplands such as orchards and wheat fields.
Rose perfumes are made from rose oil, also called attar of roses, which is a mixture of volatile essential oils obtained by steam-distilling the crushed petals of roses, a process first developed in Iran (Persia).
Rose water is a by-product of this process. It has been suggested that the Persian polymath Avicenna discovered how to make rose water in the 10th century.
It is a fairly priced commodity which you can find in most Asian shops and you will thank me later because its uses are as many and varied.

The same benefits that make rose water great for acne control help soothe skin after shaving.
Use it straight on your legs, underarms and bikini line, or mix it with distilled water, a little bit of 100 proof vodka and a few drops of rose oil for a more conventional aftershave product.
The anti-inflammatory action of rose water makes it a soothing topical treatment for sunburn. Mix it with a little bit of aloe, let it sit in the fridge for a few minutes and then apply with a cotton pad.
