I AM saddened to learn that the handball national team’s trip to the 9th championships in Nairobi Kenya has started today but we are still looking for money to send our team.
Why do we always wait for the last minute; this is why we perform badly at international outings.
Worse still, it is believed that the people that matter most at the Ministry of Sport, who help solve the problems, left the country last week as advance part of the Under-17 soccer team to the World Cup in Costa Rica.
I appreciate that soccer is the country’s number one sport but there is need for sports administrators to set priorities because not all the citizens are soccer fans.
Promoting other sporting disciplines could also create employment which most of us youths are looking for.
Look at how many jobs football has created world over, even in Zambia, it goes to show that equally, other sports can do the same if given similar attention.
This also bring me to the coverage of sports by the media in Zambia, not all of us are soccer fans, so give the best coverage to other sports, as doing so would stimulate interest in the business community to start sponsoring minor sports.
These games should not be treated as by-the-way despite being minor, we need to develop them so that they create jobs for the people.
I feel some business houses have not appreciated the reason why they should sponsor some minor sports because they are not highlighted accordingly, if anything they do not know if the sports are played in Zambia.
