BABYLON is what Jamaicans would describe the well-attended Komboni Radio first anniversary concert held last Saturday at the showgrounds in Lusaka.

Underage patrons rocked the venue with most of them engaging in illicit activities.

The show that was meant to celebrate Lusaka’s arguably most popular radio station saw the Yotam Muleya arena in the showgrounds packed to capacity but with youths mainly under the age of 18.

The show, which started around 10 hours in the morning, saw performances from popular Zambian acts such as MC Wabwino, Mozegator, Joe Chibangu, Pilato and T Sean, among others.

At around midnight, some intoxicated mothers were spotted at the arena carrying babies on their back.

“I am from a wedding within this place (showground) so I decided to come here and enjoy myself before the driver comes to pick me up,” answered one of the woman when asked what she was doing late, drunk and carrying a toddler on her back.

Typical of underage alcohol abusers, some youths were involved in fights, while some could not handle their alcohol and found themselves sleeping within the arena as thieves pounced on their properties.

Security was not enough to curb the youth’s unruly behaviour. Alcohol was being sold freely by the organisers of the event to anyone.

The event, that was being beamed live on Muvi TVs Nyimbo channel according to the cameramen that were spotted operating state-of-the-art machines, cannot be anything to show under broadcast ethics as some artistes dressed and danced in a suggestive manner.

The show can be described as successful by the organisers who collected atleast a K30 from most of the patrons as well as the good sound system offered by SoundWave under the award winning sound engineer Ringman, but the show flopped in terms of morals for the youths.
