ZESCO Limited has managed to transport a thermo generator to Chavuma District in North-Western to restore electricity after a six-day blackout.
Chavuma was plunged in total darkness about a week ago when a generator used to light the district broke down.
An attempt on Sunday by Zesco to shift a generator from Zambezi to Chavuma to restore power was thwarted by irate residents who blocked the road to prevent the machine from being taken away.
Zesco spokesperson Henry Kapata said yesterday that the power utility firm on Tuesday finally managed to transport the generator to Chavuma following a meeting with the Zambezi District administration leadership and members of the community held on Monday.
Mr Kapata said the community members agreed to have the generator transported after Zesco authorities assured them that the district would be allocated the one meant for Chavuma.
“So we transported the one from Zambezi and as we are talking, it is being installed and we expect power to be restored soon,” Mr Kapata said.
He said Zesco had bought two generators to be installed in Zambezi and Chavuma to serve as backup while the power utility was working on a permanent measure of connecting the districts to the national electricity grid.
