A WOMAN in Ndola has confronted the reality of life by telling a magistrate’s court that her 57-year-old husband defiled and impregnated their grand-daughter aged 14.
Violet Ngoma, 53, of 2715 Nkwazi Township in Ndola told Magistrate Chitundu Chongo that her husband defiled and impregnated his grand-daughter.
Ms Ngoma was testifying in a case in which her husband, Vincent Banda, of the same address, is charged with defilement contrary to the Laws of Zambia.
She testified that her teenage grand-daughter had told her that the accused started defiling her in 2008 until last year when she got pregnant.
Banda, on dates unknown but between August 2008 and Decembers 2013, is alleged to have had unlawful carnal knowledge of a girl below the age of 16.
Ms Ngoma said in December last year, her grand-daughter was always sad and that when she asked her why she was in sour moods, she revealed that Banda had been having sex with her and threatened to kill her if she told anyone.
She said that she later approached her husband over the matter and reported the case to Nkwazi Police Post where she was advised to take the child to the hospital for medical examination.
The girl was taken to Arthur Davison Children’s Hospital where results indicated that she had been defiled and was pregnant.
“I was later advised to seek legal advice from the Social Welfare Department and Legal Aid because I wanted the pregnancy to be terminated as she was too young to give birth,” Ms Ngoma told the court.
She said she got legal advice and took the child to Ndola Central Hospital where a legal abortion was carried out.
The girl also testified that her grandfather had defiled her many times and later impregnated her.
Mr Chongo adjourned the case to March 24 and April 3, for mention and trial, respectively.
Banda is remanded in custody.
