THREE people died yesterday in a car accident in Masaiti District after the bus they were travelling in overturned.
The accident happened around 10:00 hours on Mpongwe-Luanshya Road in Masaiti when the public service bus travelling from Luanshya to Masaiti overturned due to speeding.
Copperbelt Province police commissioner Joyce Kasosa confirmed the accident in an interview yesterday.
Ms Kasosa said the bus, a Toyota Hiace minibus, registration number AOB 386, driven by Arthur Chibwe, 32, of 152 (C) in Mikomfwa, Luanshya, had 17 passengers on board when it lost control due to excessive speed and overturned.
Three people, all women, died on the spot.
Ms Kasosa said seven passengers were seriously injured and were rushed to hospital.
The deceased by Press time had not been identified.
Ms Kasosa said Chibwe was in police detention and charged with causing death by dangerous driving.
And two pedestrians died while two others were rushed to hospital when a vehicle lost control and hit them in Solwezi in North-Western Province.
The accident happened last weekend near Kandemba Market on Solwezi-Mutanda Road.
North-Western Province police commissioner Eugene Sibote, who confirmed this, said the accident happened on Saturday around 21:00 hours.
Mr Sibote named the deceased as Peter Kalunga, whose age was not known, and Juda Samuti, 30.
He said the two were hit by an unregistered Funcargo which went off the road after the driver, identified as Stanley Kafwila, lost control when he tried to overtake another vehicle.
