FIRST Quantum Minerals (FQM) has sponsored six traditional chiefs from North-Western Province to Zimbabwe to attend a workshop on conservation farming.
Senior Chief Ntambo of Mwinilunga, who spoke on behalf of the other chiefs in the delegation, said it was important for people to adopt conservation farming methods to keep the production of food in Zambia afloat.
“It is good that we learn the new technology in farming as the world is fast changing and we need to adapt and move forward also,” Chief Ntambo said.
He said this at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport before departure for Zimbabwe for the workshop.
The traditional leader said conservation had proved to be better as it provided better yields and created employment as a result of high production.
Chief Ntambo said the traditional leaders would ensure they shared the knowledge they would acquire at the conference with their subjects in order to get the full benefits of conservation farming.
Other traditional leaders in the delegation included Chief Chibwika, Chief Musaka, Chief Chizera, Senior Chief Kalilele, and Chief Sikufele.
FQM country manager Kingsley Chinkuli, who saw off the chiefs at the airport, said the company felt duty bound to sponsor chiefs as part of its corporate social responsibility.
General Chinkuli said the company was promoting conservation farming in the province to prevent the depletion of soil through the usage of fertiliser, and to increase productivity and employment.
He said the mining firm would also help the FQM-sponsored farmers in conservation agriculture by buying all their produce.
