THERE is a critical need for Africa’s leadership to prioritise foundational literacy and social learning as these are the building blocks for every child’s academic success, President Hakainde Hichilema has said.
The President, who is the Global Champion for Foundational Learning, said it was unacceptable to have one in five children in Africa failing to complete primary school and four in five children unable to read and understand simple text by the age of 10.
In a virtual address to the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, United States of America, President Hichilema also said many learners did not have the skills they needed to deal with the social and emotional aspects of life at an early age.
