ZICTA deactivates 44,400 sim cards used by scammers

THE Zambia Information and Communication Technology Authority (ZICTA) has between January to July 2024 deactivated about 44,400 sim cards used by scammers to swindle money from unsuspecting people.
ZICTA has also managed to secure and block money amounting to over K7.5 million in the same period that could have been stolen by the scammers from over 5000 phones that were reported stolen by the owners.
Corporate Communications Manager Hanford Chaaba said the sim cards used by scammers were deactivated by ZICTA after the victims reported the mobile numbers that were sending them text messages and calls that were scamming in nature using the code *707#.
