POLICE in Lusaka have arrested and formally charged Socialist Party leader Fred M’membe for seditious practices, following an article he published on his social media accounts alleging corruption against Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) President Felix Tshisekedi.
Police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga said Dr M’membe, 65 had been detained in police custody and was expected to appear in court soon to answer to the charges laid against him.
Mr Hamoonga said in a statement issued in Lusaka yesterday that it was alleged that on July 16, 2024, between 13:00 hours and 14:00 hours, Dr M’membe published an article on his X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook pages titled “Tshisekedi tells DRC (Democratic Republic of Congo) Catholic bishops about the US$20 million payout to buy Zambia’s silence.”
