GOVERNMENT has suspended illegal mining activities at the ‘black mountain’ in Wusakile area in Kitwe until it gives a proper direction on the matter.
Mines, Energy and Water Development Minister Christopher Yaluma directed that all the activities at the black mountain, also known as the slug dump, should be suspended to avoid loss of lives.
Mr Yaluma said when he addressed illegal miners, popularly known as the Jerabos, in Kitwe yesterday that even though it was Government’s intention to create jobs and wealth for the Zambian people, safety concerns should be a top priority.
The minister, who was in the company of Kitwe District Commissioner Elias Kamanga, officials from the Mines Safety Department and police officers, said the slug dump was a death trap as it kept on weakening due to the illegal activities being conducted.
Mr Yaluma advised the miners to form groups and register with the District Commissioner’s office to acquire mining licences.
He further directed police officers to guard the black mountain and arrest anyone found at the premises for trespassing.
Kitwe District deputy officer commanding Peter Miselo assured the minster that police officers were ready to guard the premises.
Earlier, Mr Yaluma said mining companies should give preference to local companies when awarding contracts.
He was speaking at the Zambia General Contractors, Suppliers and Transporters Association Annual General Meeting at Roseval Hall in Chingola.
He said the Mines and Mineral Development Act 2008 provides that large-scale mining rights holders should give preference to Zambian products.
