CHIPOLOPOLO goalkeeper, Kennedy Mweene, who suffered a concussion during Zambia’s 2-1 win over Uganda in an international friendly match on Wednesday evening, has been released from hospital.
National team doctor Joseph Kabungo said in an interview yesterday that Mweene’s injury was not as serious as early feared after he collided with Uganda striker Emmanuel Okwi 30 minutes into the match.
Kabungo said Mweene suffered trauma to the head and had to be rushed to the Ndola Central Hospital for observation where diagnosis revealed that he had a mild concussion.
He said Mweene was out of danger though he experienced headache from the immediate impact and that the player has no neurological deficits and the cervical spine X-rays done at the hospital were non-revealing.
Kabungo said he had since contacted the medical team at Sundowns informing them about the incident and to also allow Mweene take a 10-day rest to enable him fully recover but that the club could make its own assessment.
“Kennedy was discharged in the evening after suffering a minor concussion during the game, he is fine but I think he is not ready to play now, may be after 10 days when he recovers fully. Otherwise the injury is not serious as earlier feared,” he said.
This means Mweene will miss this Sunday’s PSL clash against AmaZulu at the Moses Mabida Stadium in Durban.
And Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) communications manager Nkweto Tembwe said Football House was happy that Mweene’s injury was not serious.
“We are happy that Mweene’s injury is not serious, we had a chat with him and he said he is okay so that’s good news for us,” he said.
