PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema has declared the prolonged dry spell caused by El Nino effects, as a national disaster and emergency because of its devastating effects on various sectors of the country.
The El Nino effects leading to climate change phenomenon have destroyed one million of 2.2 million hectares of maize in 84 districts, threatened power generation and ground water availability.
President Hichilema said yesterday during a national address that in view of the challenges the Government had taken decisive action and declared the dry spell as a national disaster and emergency and would take measures to mitigate the effects.
