A TEENAGE girl in Monze District has died in a heroic attempt to save the life of her neighbour’s baby.
The 13-year-old girl of Freedom ‘B’ Township died on the spot after being electrocuted.
Southern Province police chief Mary Chikwanda confirmed the incident yesterday and named the deceased as Triza Mainza, a Grade Eight pupil.
Ms Chikwanda said Triza was electrocuted on Monday around 15:00 hours when she attempted to rescue a one-year-two-month-old baby who was shocked by an electrical wire.
Triza managed to rescue the baby from her neighbour’s house, but she got electrocuted and died on the spot.
“We received a report of this girl being electrocuted, she died on the spot when she tried to rescue a one-year-two-month-old baby,” Ms Chikwanda said.
She said Triza’s body was taken to Monze Mission Hospital mortuary.
In Kitwe, a Grade 10 pupil of Chamboli Secondary School on Wednesday died on the spot, while her friend sustained serious injuries when a motor vehicle careered off the road and hit them.
The accident happened around 14:00 hours near Chamboli Bus Station.
Copperbelt Province police chief Joyce Kasosa confirmed the accident and named the deceased pupil as Ruth Zulu, aged 17.
Ms Kasosa said the two girls and a man were hit by a Toyota Hilux, registration number ABM 8411, which was being driven by Lloyd Chibombya of Kitwe.
Ms Kasosa identified Ruth’s colleague as Juliet Chishimba, 16, of house number MS 2535, Mulenga Township, who sustained a fractured left leg and was rushed to Kitwe Central Hospital alongside another victim, Eden Zulu, 35, who also had a fractured left leg.
“Ruth sustained fractured legs and multiple cuts in the head and died on the spot,” Ms Kasosa said.
She said the accident happened when the vehicle, which was headed in the direction of Kitwe, lost control due to suspected speeding and hit the pedestrians who were at the roadside.
Ms Kasosa said the driver was detained and charged for causing death by dangerous driving.
