MINE unions have said Nchanga and Konkola underground mines risked being flooded if urgent measures are not put in place to recapitalise Konkola Copper Mine (KCM) as promised by Vedanta Resources.
Mineworkers Union of Zambia (MUZ) president Joseph Chewe observed that if the current status remained the same, the mines would soon go into care and maintenance.
“Lack of recapitalisation is putting pressure on KCM, starting at Konkola Smelter has been down. KCM is a dead horse as we talk now, Vedanta needs to fulfil the promise to recapitalise the mine before it is flooded,” the MUZ president said.
