MORE than 1,500 jobs were created during the ongoing construction works of 2,290kilometres of roads within and around Eastern Province at a cost of K2.7 billion, President Michael Sata has said.
Mr Sata said on his latest Facebook posting that a total of 1,570 jobs were created as at December last year.
He said he was determined to see people’s living standards improve through Government’s construction of roads.
The roads, he said, were aimed at linking all provincial capitals and opening up the country to investment, particularly in rural areas, to enhance accessibility to markets.
The Head of State said works on the upgrading of approximately 104kilometres of Chipata-Mfuwe Road were ongoing and currently stood at 90 per cent progress, while progress on the rehabilitation of selected roads in Mzanzala was at 40 per cent.
The ongoing rehabilitation of 15kilometres of selected urban roads in Lundazi was nearing completion at 99 per cent progress, while the construction of drainage structures on Lusanghazi-Luamfwa Road in the park was at 41 per cent.
The President also reported that the upgrading of approximately 105km of Chipata-Vubwi-Chadiza Road, 5kilometres of Mpezeni Road, 21kilometres of Mwami Hospital Road and 8kilometres of Vubwi township roads, which started recently, was at five per cent.
Mr Sata said the upgrading to bituminous standard of approximately 90kilometres of the Chipata-Chadiza-Katete (Chanida) roads was progressing at three per cent, while the rehabilitation of the 98kilometres Nacala corridor from Luangwa to Nyimba road was in progress.
He said the rehabilitation of the Nacala Corridor from Nyimba-Sinda was a project in progress, as was the rehabilitation of the 95kilometres Nacala Corridor from Sinda-Mutenguleni and the Nacala Corridor from Mutenguleni to Mwami Border.
Last year, the President launched the Link Zambia 8000, the Pave Zambia 2000 and L400 road projects aimed at linking all the provincial capitals in a bid to fully utilise Zambia’s status as a land-linked country.
