A YOUTH coordinator in Mufumbwe District says youths in rural areas should be supported in their efforts to sustain their livelihoods.
Mufumbwe deputy youth coordinator, Isaac Muhongo said despite lacking support, youths in rural areas had shown the potential to contribute to national development through agriculture and sports.
Mr Muhongo called for increased funding towards young people in remote areas.
Mufumbwe District yesterday commenced Youth Week activities ahead of the commemoration of Youth Day on March 12.
This year’s Youth Day theme is ‘Zambia at 50: Promoting Youth Mainstreaming for Sustainable National Development’.
A number of activities had been lined up to mark Youth Week in the district and included fundraising walks, car washes and cleaning of surroundings to promote clean environments.
Mr Muhongo said youths in Mufumbwe would continue engaging in productive activities to sustain their livelihoods.
He said the youths would also embark on a Keep-Fit programme tomorrow.
Mr Muhongo, who is an assistant trades instructor at Mufumbwe Youth Skills Centre, said different heads of department would engage in football, jogging, tug of war, and other friendly sports activities.-ZANIS.
