DYSENTERY has broken out at Kasama Girls Secondary School in Northern Province.
So far, 16 pupils have been treated of the disease at Kasama General Hospital.
Kasama District Commissioner, Kalanga Bwalya and health authorities yesterday confirmed the development to ZANIS in Kasama.
Mr Bwalya attributed the outbreak of dysentery at the learning institution to poor water supply and sanitation.
The DC has since directed Chambeshi Water and Sewerage Company to urgently increase water supply to the school to prevent further cases of the disease.
Mr Bwalya has, however, assured parents with children at Kasama Girls Secondary School not to panic as the situation has been brought under control by health personnel.
And provincial medical officer, George Liabwa, said health personnel were on the ground to contain the outbreak of dysentery at Kasama Girls Secondary School.
Dr Liabwa, however, urged school management to take proactive measures of ensuring that high levels of sanitation were sustained at the institution.
He further said a surveillance team from the Ministry of Health will continue to monitor the health of pupils at the school.–ZANIS
