THE Copperbelt Royal Council of Chiefs has urged Government to demarcate the three Copperbelt rural districts in order to improve service delivery.
Chairperson for the council, Senior Chief Chiwala said yesterday that the three rural districts, Lufwanyama, Mpongwe and Masaiti were too vast and therefore limiting development in the rural part of the Copperbelt.
Chief Chiwala said at a meeting held recently that it was decided that the council would push for the delimitation of the districts.
“We the chiefs request the Republican President Michael Sata to create three new districts out of the already existing three,” he said.
Chief Chiwala said the council had proposed that Lufwanyama should be divided into two with another to be called Kafubu.
Mpongwe should be delimited and another district called Luswishi should be created.
Masaiti District should also be divided into two with another called Kafulafuta District.
Chief Chiwala said it was difficult for service providers to reach everyone in the rural Copperbelt because the districts were too vast.
This, he said, had led to lack of development in the area while demarcating the districts would accelerate development.
And the Copperbelt Royal Council has called on Government to quickly build the new palaces promised to the chiefs.
Chief Chiwala said the current palaces were below the acceptable standards of royal residencies.
