Nkana 3 Arrows 1
MIDFIELDER Simon Bwalya came off the bench to score a brace as Nkana came from a goal down to stun 10-men Red Arrows in an exciting 2014 Samuel ‘Zoom’ Ndhlovu Charity Shield final.
As was the case when Nkana played against Mbabane Swallows in the CAF Champions League clash, Bwalya came in as a substitute to continue with his fine scoring form to take his tally to five in two games.
With the likes of Ronald ‘Sate Sate’ Kampamba missing through injury, prodigal son Evans Kangwa showed that Nkana has enough class as he marked his return in the red jersey with a goal that completely killed any Arrows strike back.
Nkana, who take on Kampala City Council Authority (KCCA) in the second round, first leg clash in Kitwe this Saturday, found themselves trailing to a fourth minute goal scored by veteran Adubelo Phiri.
Phiri finished off a cross from defender Alex Sichone that found the Nkana defender wanting inside the box in a half that saw the airmen dominate possession.
But Nkana rallied in the second half to score three goals and send a strong warning of their intentions this season. Bwalya, who came in for Francis Kombe, levelled matters in the 54th minute after tapping in a Kangwa pass.
The diminutive midfielder was back on target this time around heading in a cross by an overlapping Donashano Malama from close range as the defence marshaled by 2013 Player-of-the-year Bronson Chama became exposed.
With Arrows searching for an equaliser, Nkana made sure of the result when Kangwa put icing on the cake with a goal four minutes deep into stoppage time, thanks to a powerful header that a fully stretched Ken Mumba failed to keep out.
It was a painful defeat for Arrows who had to play much of the game a man down after Joseph Zimba was sent off by Kapiri-Mposhi based referee Jani Sikazwe for a crude tackle on Nkana captain Sydney Kalume in the 59th minute.
Nkana coach Masauso Mwale was a happy man after the match, saying the game was a dress rehearsal ahead of the match against KCCA.
Mwale said he was happy that other players who are not registered in the CAF interclub championships were given an opportunity to show what they can do.
“Most of the players, serve for two, who featured today were playing for the first time as they did not play in the Champions League and they have shown they are up to the challenge of playing in the league,” Mwale said.
Arrows stand-in-coach Charles Kafula conceded defeat saying it was the name of the game to win and lose some.
