GLENCORE, the Swiss-based owner of Mopani Copper Mine (MCM) has rescinded its decision to put its Kitwe and Mufulira mine operations under care and maintenance.
Under an agreement reached yesterday, Glencore, which had been accused of short-circuiting the process by declaring a force majeure to take the controversial decision, the miner will be allowed another 90 days to follow the laid-down procedure.
It means that workers can go back to work while the two parties dialogue over Glencore’s plans, Ministry of Mines Permanent Secretary Barnaby Mulenga said last night, confirming the latest twist.
