THE death of a Grade 12 pupil in Kawambwa in Luapula Province who died in his sleep has left school authorities puzzled.
The pupil of Kawambwa Technical High School died in his bed in his dormitory on Monday in unexplained circumstances.
Kazembe Joseph Chomba, 19, was found dead by another pupil.
The school’s headteacher Kantu Chibwe said in an interview yesterday that Kazembe, who was a school prefect was found in his bed around 06:00 hours on Monday by a fellow prefect who was on duty to check on any pupils that had remained in the dormitories instead of going for breakfast and class.
“He initially thought the young man was still sleeping but when he tried to shake him up, he realised that Kazembe was stiff,” Mr Chibwe said.
He said the matter was reported to school authorities who reported to police.
Police officers took the body to Kawambwa Hospital but it was later transferred to Mbereshi Hospital where a postmortem was done.
Mr Chibwe said Kazembe did not complain of having being ill the whole week and he went to bed at 23:30 hours after studying and chatting with his friends the previous night.
He said it was puzzling that the boy who was well died mysteriously because nothing upto this point has been found to be the cause of death.
Luapula Province Police Commissioner Malcolm Mulenga said in an interview yesterday that after Kazembe’s body was taken to the mortuary, police opened an inquiry file to investigate the matter and check for any foul play.
Mr Mulenga said a postmortem was done on Tuesday and results did not point at anything as the cause of death.
“There was nothing wrong with him according to the postmortem results,” he said.
Kazembe was buried in his home town of Nchelenge on Tuesday.
