Govt spends 27m on FMD control

THE Government has spent more than K27 million in controlling the Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) that broke out in some parts of the country last year affecting thousands heads of cattle.
Livestock and Fisheries Minister Kampamba Chewe said farmers in various parts of the country had also contributed K 110,000 in a quest to contain the disease.
Ms Chewe said punitive measures would be taken against any person who would be involved in the illegal movement of cattle during the ban as it had not been lifted.
The minister cited a recent case were a veterinary officer of Southern Province was suspended for issuing an interprovincial stock movement permit to a member of the Zambia National Farmers Union.
