A POLICE vehicle ferrying suspects to Kamfinsa State Prison on Tuesday afternoon overturned, leaving four injured.
The vehicle, a Toyota Land Cruiser registration number ZP2197 overturned after the driver lost control due to speeding.
On board were four suspects, three prison warders and a police officer.
Copperbelt police commissioner Joyce Kasosa confirmed the accident which happened along Kamfinsa Road near Kamfinsa Secondary School around 17:30 hours.
Ms Kasosa said the vehicle, which was being driven by an officer only identified as Sergeant Mudenda of Riverside Police Station, was transporting suspects to Kamfinsa Prison after they appeared for court sessions.
She said the vehicle overturned along the way and left one prison warder, identified as Stephen Malumbe, 27, of Kamfinsa Prison seriously injured and was rushed to Kitwe Central Hospital (KCH) where he was admitted.
“The police vehicle that is used to ferry suspects to court overturned when the driver lost control because of suspected speeding.
“Apart from one prison warder who is admitted at KCH for observation, the others on board were discharged after being treated,” Ms Kasosa said.
Ms Kasosa said the suspects who came out of the vehicle unhurt in the accident did not flee.
