THREE people of Nyimba district died while two others escaped unhurt after the vehicle they were in rammed into a stationary truck on the Great East Road in Katete.
Both Eastern Province Police Commissioner Lackson Sakala and Katete District Commissioner Joseph Makukula confirmed the road traffic accident which happened at Mtetezi turn off around 19:30 hours on Tuesday.
Mr Sakala named the deceased as Maureen Mumba 21 of Old Nyimba who sustained a deep cut on her eye and on her head, Davison Lungu 39 sustained a deep cut on the head and died on the spot and a Mr A. Banda of Nyimba who sustained a deep cut on the head and died on the spot.
He said Moses Zulu, 27, of Ben village in Chief Ndake escaped unhurt.
He said the accident happened when vehicle, namely Toyota Sprinter registration number ABJ 8417 driven by Grayford Phiri 30 of Mkanda village in Chief Mkanda of Chipangali District with four passengers rammed into a Scania Light truck registration number ABM 6038.
Mr Sakala said the bodies of the deceased were lying in the St Francis Mission Hospital mortuary awaiting post-mortem examination.
