A MANHUNT has been launched by police in Kitwe for a Congolese national who is believed to have abducted an 18-month-old baby over an unpaid debt of K3,000.
Copperbelt police Commissioner Charity Katanga confirmed that the Congolese national, only identified as Patrick, abducted the baby because Lincoln Mwansa the father of the child owed him some money.
Ms Katanga said when Patrick went to Mr Mwansa’s house in Bulangililo township to ask for his money, he was told that he had traveled to Chembe district.
She said Patrick decided to carry the child with him as he was leaving. The mother of the child only noticed the baby was missing after Patrick had left.
“I can confirm that a one-year-six-months old baby was abducted on Friday last week around 12:00 hours and the matter was reported to the police by the mother of the child of house number N84 Bulangililo township,” she said.
Ms Katanga said the mother called Patrick to ask about the baby and he responded that he had carried the child and would only take it back after Mwansa settled the debt.
She said the mother of the child pleaded vainly with the man for the release of her child.
Ms Katanga said the mother later reported the matter to Riverside Police.
