THE Government is expected to upgrade 60 kilometres of selected roads in Chipata of Eastern Province.
Chipata Central Member of Parliament (MP) Moses Mawere said in Chipata on Wednesday that the new road project was in line with Chipata being a city.
He said when he visited a zonal health centre under construction near Mary Mother Catholic Parish in Chipata that the upgrading of the 60-km road network was vital for the city.
“The 60 kilometres of the road is new in Chipata and is not a Sable one. The new contractor will be awarded to undertake the project,” he said.
Mr Mawere also thanked the Catholic church for partnering with the Government in addressing a number of areas.
He said the Church found it fit to put up a school which was now operational, while the construction of a zonal health centre in the densely populated Nabvutika township was also underway.
He said the Government had plans to construct a zonal health centre in the area, but before the project could start, the Catholic Church was constructing it.
“It is good that the Church has come to the aid of the Government by embarking on the construction of the health centre,” Mr Mawere said.
He also assured that the Government through the ministry of health would equip the clinic upon completion.
Mary Mother of God Parish Priest Joe McMenamin said the zonal clinic would have a theatre, utra-sound and other important departments.
Fr McMenamin said initially the clinic was expected to gobble K1.3 million, but due to the bill of quantities, the figure would rise.
Meanwhile, Mr Mawere donated K21,000 in cheque towards the electrification of a hammermill belonging to the disabled.
