THERE was shock and horror in Nakonde on Thursday when the father of a still-born baby ran off with its remains as the funeral procession was heading to the cemetery.
Jacob Sichalwe of Katozi village was part of the somber procession when he suddenly snatched the remains the baby from the arms of his aunt and bolted into the bush.
Some people tried gave chase but he eluded them and by the time of going to print yesterday, Police were still searching for the man and the remains of dead son.
Muchinga Commissioner of Police Chola Katanga who confirmed the incident said Sichalwe appeared to have taken news of wife, identified as Maggie Namwila, giving birth to still-born rather badly.
Later in the day, as the funeral procession headed to the cemetery, with Sichalwe’s aunt, Elmeldah Nakaundi, carrying the baby’s remains, the father made a grab for dead child and disappeared into the nearby bush.
Some reports suggest the man, said to be aged 26, was said to have been drinking before he arrived at the hospital.
