LCC hands back seized merchandise

THE Lusaka City Council (LCC) has returned the merchandise seized in a recent operation at Luburma Market where it demolished 11 illegal makeshift shops.
The council’s decision comes a day after irate ruling Patriotic Front Secretary General Davies Mwila summoned acting Lusaka Mayor Chilando Chitangala and directed that the local authority compensates the affected Luburma Market traders whose goods were either damaged or looted in the operation.
LCC acting Public Relations Manager George Sichimba said in a statement yesterday that contrary to assertions the merchandise were not looted by the State police, but that they were taken to the Lusaka Civic Centre for safe keeping.
