JUSTICE Minister Given Lubinda says Zambia is closely working with other countries like Rwanda to prevent genocide ideologies.
Mr Lubinda said it was worrying to learn that some Rwanda genocide perpetrators were still scattered across the globe and that there was need for cooperation to hand them over to the courts of law.
He was speaking when he officiated at the ‘KWIBUKA 24’ (meaning remembering the genocide at 24 years) in honour of the more than 800, 000 people who died in 1994 Rwanda genocide.
“I would like to reaffirm Zambia’s commitment to resolve and prevent genocide ideologies, mass atrocities, hate crimes on the continent and the globe,” he said.
Mr Lubinda added that Rwanda’s socio-economic transformation continues to inspire Zambia as it was a source of pride for the continent.
Rwandan ambassador to Zambia Monique Mukaruliza thanked President Edgar Lungu for showing commitment to ending genocide related atrocities.
Mr Mukaruliza added that bilateral relations between Rwanda and Zambia had grown and that the two countries would benefit from the Zambia-Rwanda joint permanent commission of cooperation.
She said it was important to always keep in mind, the words spoken by President Paul Kagame in 2004 saying, “We cannot turn the clock back nor can we undo the harm caused but we have the power to determine the future and to ensure that what happened Never Happens Again”.
This year’s Commemoration was held under the theme, Kwibuka twiyubaka translated as “remember-unite-and renew.
