MAZABUKA Golf Club can finally say they are having a return on their heavy investment in the sport after they won the national quadrangular championship for the first time in the competition’s history.
In a traditional year opening national event, Mazabuka out-scored rivals Nchanga, Chainama and Nkana in a tournament they hosted.
After two trips to the national championships but without a winner’s medal, Mazabuka’s persistence finally told as they amassed a resounding 64 points to oust favourites Chainama who finished in a disappointing third place.
Chingola side Nchanga were a surprise package as they bagged the runner-up position on 56 points as Chainama took third position with 54 points while Nkana saw their dreams crumble when they managed a paltry 42 points to sit at the bottom of the scoreboard.
It was a famous tournament victory for Mazabuka team manager Alfred Akasiwa, who described his side’s showing as an absolutely superb performance.
Chainama, who arrived in Mazabuka bubbling with confidence after dislodging 2017 champions Lusaka to represent the region, went back a disappointed force with Team Manager Chongo Kasongole declining to comment on the bad results.
Mazabuka made their maiden appearance at the national final when they hosted the event in 2014 but narrowly lost the championship to Chilanga.
Two years later, they were in Ndola but their outing was unsuccessful as they again finished in second position to Lusaka Golf Club.
