By KENNEDY MUPESENI –
THE Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has maintained its position as Africa’s largest copper producer after Zambia failed to supplant it according to the 2017 data.
According to the Bank of Zambia (BoZ), Zambia recorded 786,731 tonnes of copper last year, two per cent higher than the previous year but of course far below the DRC’s production of 1.09 million tonnes.
REUTERS reports that the DRC’s 1.09 million tonnes copper production figure for 2017 is up by 6.9 per cent compared to the previous year.
The Zambian Government had projected to record copper production figure of between 800,000 and  850,000 tonnes in 2017.
The DRC’s output figure for cobalt reportedly surged by 15.5 per cent to 73,940 tonnes.
