By MILDRED KATONGO –
UNITED States Ambassador to Zambia Daniel Foote has said American Corners are spaces designed to create a better understanding between the two countries.
Mr Foote said the Corners are a public face of the US for the people of Zambia and around the world.
He said American Corners were open facilities that welcomed youth, academics, journalists, entrepreneurs, and members of the public to build bridges between people of other countries and the US.
Mr Foote said this at the opening of the Maya Angelou American Corner in Lusaka based at the National Institute of Public Administration (NIPA).
“Some of you may recall that the United States established the American Cultural Center at Central Arcades in 1975.  Over time, the space became too small and we moved twice more to eventually settle at the COMESA premises in the Central Business District. We are grateful to the leadership and administration of NIPA for partnering with us for this location and dedicated staff to bring our new American Corner to life,” he said.
He said the American Corner was dedicated to the legacy of a prominent American who they believed represented many of the values that both the US and Zambia held dearly.
Mr Foote was overjoyed with the entrepreneurship, democracy and governance, and health programmes that had taken place in Zambia so far.
