LOCAL Government Minister Vincent Mwale has said street vendors that were removed from the Lusaka Central Business District (CBD) will be relocated to Lumumba, Tokyo and BH markets on Monday next week.
Mr Mwale also said the satellite markets in the townships would be ready for the street vendors to be trading from next week.
He said the Government was concerned with the livelihoods of the vendors
following their removal from the CBD and would ensure that they were relocated to markets with proper hygiene standards.
Mr Mwale said the burden was on Government to provide proper trading places for all the street vendors that were removed from the streets in the wake of the cholera epidemic.
He said that Lumumba Market had been cleared and once all works were completed this week, about 1,000 traders dealing in salaula would be relocated to the area.
“BH Market that is been constructed by the Zambia National Service is on schedule to be completed at the end of the week, Lumumba will be readily available on as well as the Tokyo market, we are on course,” Mr Mwale said.
Mr Mwale said BH Market and Tokyo Markets would accommodate traders dealing in fruits and vegetables.
He said the markets would give the traders dignity and help them grow and attract investment.
Vendors have been complaining against their displacement and lack of space in the gutted City Market.
Some staged a protest yesterday at the Civic Centre to get clarity on the way forward.
