A-TWENTY-TWO-YEAR-OLD man has died while another is nursing serious injuries in Nyimba District of Eastern Province after the two fell off a 35 meter radio transmitting tower.
Faston Kalunga was pronounced dead upon arrival at Nyimba General Hospital while Joseph Daka is nursing injuries.
Mr Kalunga met his fate when he was erecting a radio transmitter belonging to Valley FM Radio, owned by his father, which collapsed following a heavy downpour a few days ago.
The deceased fell off the apex of the tower and went on a roof of a house going direct onto the ground of the bedroom and sustained head injuries.
Mark Tembo an eye witness said both Mr Kalunga and Mr Daka were not wearing any protective gear.
“If these people had worn helmets, they could have not sustained heard injuries that led to the loss of life. Mr Daka survived because he held on to the tower till it came down,” he said.
Mr Tembo said Mr Daka was slightly lower in the tower unlike the friend who was at the apex of the tower.
Another witness Joyce Banda said when she came out of her house after hearing the noise outside, that she found Mr Kalunga lying helpless in a pool of blood while Mr Daka was unconscious lying on the ground.
“The transmitter was too high and was made out of ordinary thin Iron bars that made it collapse the second time” she said.
Nyimba General Hospital medication officer in-charge Robert Banda said Mr Daka was in a stable condition and out of danger.
“He is better compared to the time he was brought in, because he is able to talk and eat today,” he said.
Police have confirmed and received the information of the death of Mr Kalunga and were investigating the matter. – ZANIS
