THE International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has urged Zambia to embrace the development of Nuclear Science to enhance national productivity.
IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano said the country had the capacity for growth in the nuclear sector, and his institution would this year send experts to trace the viability of sectors such as nuclear energy.
Mr Yukiya said this in Lusaka on Monday when he met Higher Education Minister Nkandu Luo on the overall coordination of the IAEA-supported programme and human resource development.
“Most people classify Nuclear Science as something terrible but I’m here to share with you that there is a positive side to this phenomena if well-harnessed,” he said.
Mr Yukiya pledged his institution’s unwavering support to Zambia in the area of Nuclear Science development.
Professor Luo said the Government was planning to establish a Nuclear Science Centre of training in the country to build the performance capacity of Zambians in the sector.
She said Zambia could benefit from the sector through adopting schemes such as the use of nuclear energy to run certain sectors of the economy.
Mr Yukiya also met Foreign Affairs Minister Joseph Malanji during an indaba on the diplomatic engagements and international legal instruments related to the IAEA technical programme.
