ROAN Member of Parliament Chishimba Kambwili was yesterday arrested for fraud and later released on police bond.
Mr Kambwili was arrested after he was interviewed by the police at Lusaka Central Police Station.
He arrived at the station around 10:00 hours with a horde of supporters.
Mr Kambwili was arrested for allegedly registering a company under false names.
Police spokesperson Esther Katongo confirmed that Mr Kambwili was charged with forgery, uttering false documents and giving false information to a public officer.
Ms Katongo said Mr Kambwili would appear in court soon.
“We wish to state that the summoning of Honourable Kambwili has nothing to do with politics as he insinuated when he addressed the media on Monday but that this is purely a criminal matter,” Ms Katongo said.
After his release on bail, Mr Kambwili at a Press briefing at his residence said he was impressed with the police for acting independently and releasing him on bond.
He said the charges were tramped up and meant to intimidate him.
Earlier at the police station, Mr Kambwili arrived with supporters who carried a mattress in readiness for him to spend a night in the holding cells.
Police had to fire teargas to disperse supporters of the National Democratic Party (NDC) and suspected Patriotic Front (PF) supporters.
The NDC supporters were at the police station to offer support when suspected PF supporters arrived and a clash ensued.
Alert police officers dispersed the unruly crowd and two people were reported to have been injured and taken to hospital.
But PF media director Sunday Chanda said the PF would investigate if the people in the clash were PF members.
He said the ruling party did not condone violence.
