Police chief testifies in copper theft case

A POLICE officer in Kitwe has testified how he was informed that his subordinates had delivered a load of stolen copper to a company owned by a Chinese.
This is a matter in which five Kitwe-based police officers are accused of stealing copper cathodes valued at K102,487.97.
Kitwe District Commanding Officer Edwin Chisi, who appeared before Magistrate Chongo Musonda, explained that while on duty at the district administration office, he received a report from a Chinese only identified as Linda that some people had delivered copper cathodes at her company premises.
Particulars of the offence are that the accused on October 25, stole 1,527.30 kg of copper cathodes.
Mr Chisi told the court that he asked Linda if the copper plates where still at her premises and she agreed.
He said it was at that point that he instructed the district criminal investigations officer only identified as Mr Chipalata to go and check on the copper cathodes that were delivered.
The accused persons are Levinus Mukana, Swift Mumba, Richard Sailoni, Gideon Longwe and Prince Kabwe all police officers and are jointly charged with theft by servant.
Magistrate Chongo adjourned the matter to January 25, 2018 for continued trial.
