POLICE in Kitwe on the Copperbelt Province have arrested three Community Crime Prevention Unit (CCPU) officers for allegedly causing the death of a 34-Year-Old man.
Copperbelt Commissioner of Police Charity Katanga who confirmed the incident said it happened over the weekend when the three attempted to arrest the deceased for assault.
Ms Katanga said the incident happened after the three suspects went to apprehend the deceased identified as Frackson Mwanza of Ndeke village for an alleged offence  of assault occasioning bodily harm.
“I can confirm that three CCPU officers have been arrested for causing death of a 34 year-old man of Ndeke village ,an incident which happened on Sunday night,” she said.
Ms Katanga identified the suspects as Mwape Malale, 57,Shawa Ziyalula, 47and Edwin Mayamba 24 all of Mwaiseni township.
She explained that the three suspects upon apprehending the deceased after receiving information from the complainant Marrien Mwanza 25,allegedly beat him up while he was handcuffed.
Ms Katanga said the deceased in the process of beatings became unconscious and was taken to Ndeke police station.
“ At the police station, officers on duty noticed that the suspect was not breathing properly and informed the criminal investigations officer  who later went to the station and confirmed the report,” she said.
The commissioner said the scene was visited and the body was inspected but it had no physical injuries.
She said the body was later taken to Kitwe Teaching Hospital Mortuary awaiting postmortem.
She said the trio have however been arrested for the offence of murder and would appear in court soon.
