FIVE people of the same family, including a year-old girl, have died in Nakonde after a vehicle they were travelling in plunged into a stream as the driver attempted to cross a flooded bridge.
Muchinga Commissioner of police Chola Katanga said incident said occurred between Wednesday 18:00 hours and Thursday 08:00 at Miwanga stream at Shem village of chief Nawaitwika’s chiefdom.
Mr Katanga said that the five were travelling in an unregistered Toyota Corolla from Nakonde to Chanka.
He identified the deceased as William Sichalwe the driver, Shadreck Sichalwe 20, Martha Nalavwe, 35, the driver’s wife together with their daughters Debora Nachalwe one-year-old and Saviour Simukoko 17 a grade-nine pupil at Chanka Basic School.
All the deceased are from Chanka village.
“We received a report from Nakonde district commissioner Field Simwinga that one male, William Sichalwe, 40 of Chanka village of Chief Nawaitwika in Nakonde who was driving a Toyota Corolla, green in colour, unregistered with four passengers on board drowned,” he said.
Sichalwe is believed to have tried to drive across the flooded bridge over Miwanga stream when the car was swept away by the strong current.
Children going to swim at the stream made the grim discovery of a submerged vehicle with bodies inside some 500m from the bridge yesterday morning.
A combined team of police officers and fire fighters who rushed to the scene managed to retrieve the bodies from the submerged vehicle. They were identified by their relatives.
By afternoon, efforts were continuing to try retrieve the car.
