CHAINAMA Hills Hospital spends more than K23,000 monthly to feed 13 mentally challenged persons with no fixed abode who have been ‘stranded’ at the institution for between three to 10 years.
Chainama Hospital spokesperson George Tafuna said the institution spent a minimum of K60 per day on one person.
“We spend an average of K780 at the end of the day on all the13 patients just on food,” Mr Tafuna said in an interview on Thursday.
Mr Tafuna said it was costly for the hospital to take care of the 13 patients whose relatives the institution had failed to locate.
Chainama Hospital currently has 228 patients in its custody. A patient is expected to spend an average of 248 days under the institution’s care before being discharged.
